The papers in this volume, which is the first published work to deal exclusively with the Bleek and Lloyd Ethnographic Collection, honour the early efforts of W.H.I Bleek and L.C. Lloyd in the field of Khoisan studies in southern Africa.

Wilhelm Bleek and his sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd documented the; language of the/Xam Bushmen by taking down diction, in a phonetic script they had developed, more than 12 000 pages of folklore, accounts of daily life, and descriptions of rituals. Since 1870s this ethnographic material has been used extensively by linguists, folklorists and archaeologists, and this book brings together researchers from these diverse but related fields.

The first part of this book describes these two unusual personalities and their work, the second the research that has followed. It this not only represents a detailed biographical account of the Bleek Family’s work with the /Xam informants. it also represents ta contemporary position on the status of their ethnographic collection.
